Who is Owen Beck? Liverpool's next Andy Robertson wanted by Celtic and Rangers
Owen Beck has been one of the signings of the season in the Scottish Premiership with his form at Dundee attracting interest from Celtic and Rangers. The 21-year-old’s loan move from Liverpool to Dens Park flew under the radar but he quickly gained attention with some standout performances. Beck was a revelation as Dundee enjoyed a successful first half of the season on their return to the Scottish Premiership and the Liverpool loanee was undoubtedly their star player.
The Welsh U21 international scored two goals and provided two assists across 17 appearances in Scotland, before Liverpool recalled him in January. Jürgen Klopp required cover at left-back with Andrew Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas both ruled out through injuries. Beck has been compared stylistically to Scotland captain Robertson as he possesses similar attributes and his loan spell at Dundee allowed him to showcase them. Joe Gomez has been deputising at left-back in recent weeks with Beck - nephew of Liverpool legend Ian Rush - named on the bench in the win over Fulham in the League Cup after missing the FA Cup triumph over Arsenal. However, Klopp could still sanction a loan exit during the January window and we’ve taken a closer look at the promising left-back.
Could Owen Beck leave Liverpool this January?
Liverpool rebuffed enquiries from Celtic and Rangers ahead of the January window. Both Glasgow giants were impressed with Beck’s performances at Dundee and wanted to loan him for the second half of the season. Liverpool, however, required him to stay at Anfield to provide cover with Robertson and Tsimikas sidelined. But both players are expected to return before the window closes as confirmed by Pep Lijnders this week.
“Robbo, he’s almost at the three-month mark, so he will get checked by the surgeon,” said Klopp. “And if he does that scan and we see everything [so] that we can really progress him, he will go to Dubai for a week to do proper volume sessions, proper sessions, so that will be good for him. Then we see the three-month-mark scan and then we can see how quick he can go into contact again. Same for Kostas. Kostas is progressing really well, really quick. So hopefully both of them – Robbo and Kostas – will be back at the end of this month to train with the team.” With both players due back and Gomez impressing at left-back, it’s understood Liverpool could sanction a loan deal later in the month.

Which clubs are interested in signing Owen Beck?
Beck remains firmly on Celtic and Rangers’ radars but they could choose to pursue other targets. Greg Taylor is Celtic’s starting left-back but he needs competition with Alexandro Bernabei struggling since moving to Glasgow. Across the city, Ridvan Yilmaz has been strongly linked with a move to Italy and Rangers will need cover for Borna Barisic - who is also out of contract next summer. Dundee also retain an interest in re-signing Beck until the end of the season with boss Tony Docherty a massive admirer. “Owen will be greatly missed by everyone at Dundee FC as he has been outstanding both on and off the field,” he enthused.
How much is Owen Beck worth?
Beck’s market value is a lowly €600k but that will undoubtedly rise with his exposure to first-team football and impressive performances. The Welshman’s contract runs until 2026 and Liverpool are highly unlikely to sanction a permanent exit in January. While Beck impressed at Dundee, moving to Celtic or Rangers would be a considerable step-up with expectations exponentially higher. A straight loan deal till the end of the season would be the most likely deal in January, but interested parties could try to insert a purchase option.
